Balancing Economic, Social, and Environmental Interests in River Ethiope Basin.
River Ethiope Trust Foundation (RETFON) is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization (NGO) working for protection of River Ethiope, Nigerian society, and the Rights of Nature in Africa. We work to halt destructive ecological development projects, and to encourage equitable and sustainable methods of meeting needs for water, energy and flood management in the River Ethiope Catchment region. The Foundation was founded in April, 1992, but was officially registered on August 28th, 1999 by the Corporate Affairs Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, under Companies and Allied Matters Decree No.1, 1990. (PART C-INCORPORATED TRUSTEES) with registration number RC: 12,239.
OUR GOAL
To promote sustainable development of River Ehiope and its resources through local initiatives with external supports, cascading these achievements to others areas in the Niger Delta and Nigeria.
OUR VISION
We seek a River Ethiope that is valued as a living system, protected, and nurtured for the benefit of the human and biological communities that depend on it.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to be an independent voice that defends and advocates for the River Ethiope, and activates others to protect and restore the river.
Our rivers are facing enormous challenges — habitat loss, water pollution, dredge, constant development pressure, Climate change, uninhibited industrial/urban development.
